Irabina Autism Services is so proud to present world renowned Professor Temple Grandin in Melbourne on Saturday November 21st 2015. Joining Professor Temple Grandin is Australia’s very own Tim Sharp creator of Laser Beak Man and Jeanette Purkis.

Dr Temple Grandin is very impressive and a true inspiration for people with autism and their families. She is a best selling author, global speaker on humane livestock handling, and has been the subject of an award winning HBO film.

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is now the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes has been brought to the screen. She has been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), major television programs, such as the BBC special “The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow”, ABC’s Primetime Live, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20, and has been written about in many national publications, such as Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and New York Times.. Among numerous other recognitions by media, Bravo Cable did a half-hour show on her life, and she was featured in the best-selling book, Anthropologist from Mars.

Laser Beak Man is the colourful superhero created by Australian artist Tim Sharp who has autism and has won fans from all around the world with his unique sense of humor and happy and very original art. Drawing was used as a way of helping Tim to communicate. Tim did learn to speak. At age 11 Tim invented Laser Beak Man who allows Tim to show the world his great sense of humour and intelligence as well as his original way of looking at life.

JEANETTE PURKIS

Jeanette Purkis is passionate about improving the lives of people on the Autism spectrum and their families. She is the author of ‘Finding a Different Kind of Normal: Misadventures with Asperger Syndrome’ – an autobiography, and ‘The Wonderful World of Work: A Workbook for Asperteens’- an activity book about employment for teens on the Autism spectrum. She has contributed to three other publications. Jeanette has co-written a new book due for release in mid-2016, entitled ‘Mental Health and the Autistic Spectrum’ Jeanette has a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome and atypical schizophrenia.

Jeanette has been working full-time for the Australian Public Service since 2007. In between writing books and paid work, Jeanette frequently gives talks about living well with Autism and mental illness. Jeanette has been speaking to audiences about Autism since 2005. She presented at the Asia Pacific Autism Conference 2015, Aspect Autism in Education Conference 2014, TEDx Canberra and a number of other events. She hosts her own internet radio show, facilitates a women’s support group and is an ambassador for a number of Autism organisations. Jeanette featured in the documentary Alone in a Crowded Room. Jeanette lives in Canberra with her little black kitty.
