Special Education


Special Education Teachers complete an undergraduate teaching degree at university in which they are trained in child development and play. Special Education Teachers at Irabina have also completed a Graduate Diploma in Special Education.

Special Education Teachers can work with families to help develop a child’s ability to:

  • Explore and manipulate objects
  • Develop and extend play themes
  • Develop and extend play sequences
  • Develop object substitution
  • Develop and extend role play
  • Develop and extend social skills including imitation, turn taking, sharing, and playing alongside and with peers.

Special Education at Irabina

Special Education Teachers at Irabina work within a team of other professionals to provide high quality Early Intervention programs within small groups or individual sessions. They also provide outreach support to children in their community setting – e.g. kindergarten, childcare and primary school. Special Education Teachers can also work individually with a family within their own home or at Irabina to develop and extend play skills.

Education Assistants at Irabina

Education Assistants at Irabina have completed a Certificate III in Children’s Services and additionally a Diploma in Children’s Services. Assistants provide support to therapists and teachers in group and individual sessions. They are involved in the preparation, set-up and pack-up of materials. Education Assistants also participate in family support programs such as My Time and Sing and Grow.
